Master the Way of the Samurai
What martial arts do you teach?
We focus on traditional Japanese Jūjutsu techniques geared toward self-defense in modern contexts. Additionally instruction is offered in various weapons skills such as Bōjutsu and Kenjutsu.
How often are classes held each week?
Many martial arts studios teach 1 hour classes and offer classes every day. Training every day is difficult for many people to work into a busy schedule. Instead APMA holds 2 hour classes twice a week to make it easier to attend and not miss out on instruction. Classes are forming now. The number of classes will be determined by demand. Get in touch!
Do I need prior martial arts experience to join?
Yes, you must be a master of at least one other martial art prior to being accepted at APMA. No, that is not true, but I need to know if you are paying attention. No experience is required – all levels are welcome provided you come with the intent to learn, understand common sense and have a good sense of humor.
What equipment should I bring to class?
Battles are fought with 9’ long spears, razor sharp swords, and battle-ready armor, but you won’t need these right away. Training can be started with sweats and a T-shirt. Traditional uniforms are worn, but there is no need to get these until you try it out and decide if you like the training.
Is there an age limit for enrolling in classes?
All classes are adult classes and the minimum age is 18.
Currently there are no plans for Children’s classes. Children would greatly benefit from an education in traditional martial arts, but the current social zeitgeist makes this too problematic to be practical.
What weapons are taught?
Jūjutsu is the emphasis in the beginning, but this will involve a lot of small weapons that are regularly encountered in the real world such as knives, sticks, and small hand-held items. In addition there is a lot of training involving larger sticks up to 6’ long (Bōjutsu) as well as sword training (Kenjutsu). Advanced students will have training in other traditional weapons.
Explore the Art and Spirit of Jūjutsu
APMA guides students through the core principles and techniques of Jūjutsu. This training is very ‘hands-on’ and students take turns practicing techniques on each other to gain realistic insight into the effectiveness of the techniques. This training is naturally a bit ‘rough and tumble’, however training is done slow to prevent injuries but you can expect a bit of soreness and a few bruises. This will naturally diminish as your body is conditioned through the training. When certain levels of competence are achieved, free training is also practiced, but there is no sport competition due to the bad habits created by the rules of sport training.
